Samsung UN40C7000 40-Inch 1080p 240 Hz 3D LED HDTV (Black) Review

This is my second Samsung LED LCD TV. I originally had purchased a UN40C6400 series from Sams Club. That purchase was easy as they had aligned all of the 120hz+ TV’s along one rack attached to individual Blu-ray’s. The Samsung’s crisp clarity, smooth motion, and black blacks, made buying any other brand a non-option. That TV found its way to my patents where they still marvel and exclaim positive remarks over its picture.

This model the Samsung UN40C7000 is better in all areas when compared to the 6 series. The 240hz, ensures crisp smooth motion, the contrast provides even deeper blacks. This TV is a dream. One feature which I find outstanding in the newer models is the reduction in MPEG conpression artifacts. The removal of these makes the picture on the LCD-LED TV’s much clearer than my Pioneer KURO plasma TV. Even Low Def TV looks clear and crisp, with minimal up-scaling artifacts.

Since the unit didn’t come with 3D glasses, did try the 3d effect until a set arrived. 3D off of Directv via the Samsung looks pretty good, I’ll use it every now and then, but not as my preferred viewing choice. In simulated 3D mode, it worked OK. Not a feature I’ll be using much, not because of lack of quality, but no need to watch the news in 3D.

About the only negative aspects would be the slimline connectors that replace the Ethernet port, and RCA ports. The thin nature of this TV makes it difficult to find space for the full sized connectors.

An annoyance found in both Samsung’s was the inability to wake the TV to any source outside of the coax or usb slot. Personally I like setting the TV up as an Alarm clock, but for those that use cable or satellite boxes,using those devices as the input are not an option in Alarm mode.

We purchased this TV as soon as the 2010 models were available.

The Amazon purchasing experience was what we have come to expect: easy, with delivery as expected.

We had problems out of the box that were not related to the TV itself, but rather related to our cable provider, Brighthouse Networks. In attempting to resolve the issue, I first called Samsung on about March 11, 2010. The Samsung folks were unable to identify the model based upon the information I gave them from the label on the back of the TV. Finally, I was told that Samsung representatives had not yet been provided with any information on the new 2010 models. They were unable to help me at all. I was told that someone would call me back before the end of the month (Remember, this was March 11, so Samsung was are promising to call be back within three weeks!). I find it strange indeed that Samsung would begin delivery of products they are not prepared to support.

That said, the problem was eventually diagnosed by Brighthouse and was related to their system not to the TV itself. The TV has a fantastic, almost unbelievable picture. Other than the fact that the speakers are marginal, I have not discovered anything I do not like about the TV. I’ll have to hook it up to play through my receiver, but given the thickness of the TV and the limited space for speakers within the unit itself, it’s hard to believe the sound is as good as it is.

I was in the market for a bigger HD than I already had but was not wanting to spend over 00. I do not play games, etc. but watch lots of sports and movies basically. I narrowed it down to the Samsung and two other brands.
My final decison was made after seeing the TVs live in a store and realizing that I could get the Samsung from
Amazon and not pay tax. Plus the shipping was FREE! The delivery was scheduled for between 3-7pm. He arrived
promptly at 3:00. He brought the TV into the house and placed it in the room where I requested. It was easy
to assemble. The manual said it was a two person job but I did it myself (I’m a 50 year old woman). The set up
was easy and accessible, especially if you have done it before. I was not prepared for the excellent picture
quality, color saturation, and actually good quality sound without even a surround sound system. I am so pleased
with this TV. I haven’t read the entire manual yet so I am looking forward to other applications that I haven’t
educated myself about yet. I am also really pleased that I saved myself some money – Amazon is the way to go

Samsung UN65C6500 65-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV, Black Review

(Note, I am ranking this TV 3.5 stars)

I have a Sony 46″ XBR3 but have been dying to upgrate to at least a 60″. So when I see Samsung has two 65″ers in their 2010 line up (the 6500 and the not-yet-released-at-this-time 8500), I knew that I have to get one of them now.

First a few disclaimers on my purchase decision:
1. I only want to buy a LED LCD from Sony or Samsung–it’s a personal thing. No Plasma/regular LCD/projector. So there aren’t that many choices
2. Ideally I would have bought a local-dimming LED LCD since it will have the best contrast/dark level. But it’s not available for 60″+ and I don’t see it in the horizon in the next 18 months.
3. I hang the TV on the wall and only use the TV for display only. So all the other bells and whistles on sound–I don’t care and won’t review here
4. while 3D can be cool, I think it’s over-hyped and doesn’t worth another 0-1K for the 8500. I also need the TV now so 6500 it is!
5. This purchase is a “upgrade” to my 46″ Sony XBR3, which was a decent top model 3-4 years ago. I also bought a Samsung 46″ b650 LCD last year, so some of my comments will inevitably be compared against these TVs.

Pros:
1. Aesthetics. At 1.2″ thickness, this unit is super slick, especially if you hang it on the wall–a great visual asset to our family room. Viewing aside, the glossy screen actually makes the unit looks more elegant.
2. Picture quality is not bad, when you can overlook some uniformity issues in bright/solid color scenes (see my cons). No clouding/flash light issues in dark scenes that are common with some LCD TVs. Excellent contrast and in terms of viewing angle; I don’t see any significant degradation even past 45 degrees.

Cons:
1. There is only 1 big con IMO that makes this a 3.5-star instead of a 5-star The TV has some uniformity issues (vertical bands/lines of a different shades). This is especially blatant if you are watching bright scenes (i.e., watching the World Cup in a sea of grass green or in a DVD player menu when the background is supposed to be one solid color). At first, I thought this is due to a defective TV so I called AMZN for an exchange. (BTW, Kudos to AMZN concierge for the excellent CS.) But the 2nd TV also has the same problem, amid milder that I can probably “live with”. I now think the problem is due to the edge-lit LED design as the bands seem to exhibit a pattern and especially obvious in the center (furtherst from the edge). Minus 1 star here!

(Other cons):
1. No wireless adapter included. Samsung, you just lost a potential customer who could potentially give you extra revenue from using the internet apps. Instead, you decided to nickle and dime me on the wireless adapter that probably worths mfg cost (and no way am I buying it for -100).
2. For whatever reason, Samsung decides to use a glossy screen on all their LED TVs. My windows are behind the sofa so I see all the glares during daytime viewing. A downgrade from my Sony XBR3 or Samsung B650 which have matte screens. Minus .5 star here!
3. The chrome TV base is very cheesy and ugly. I am glad that I get to remove this for hanging the TV. It was also a pain to remove the base as well. In my Sony XBR3, you can remove the screws and the TV would still sit securely on the stand, so you can take your time to lift the TV and hang it. But the C6500 base is poorly designed that as soon as you remove the screws that secure the base, the TV would fall and have no where to go but up–a challenging task you if only have 2 people for the task.
3. It’s impossible to access the I/O panel once you hang the TV (I have a low-profile mount). I don’t understand why they don’t leave a few extra ports on the side.
4. If I have to be picky, the remote looks cheap. It looks like a remote from a 10 year old VCR, totally not matching the sleek glass bezel of the set. I use an universal Remote so it’s not a big issue for me.
5. Finally, this TV, like any other 120Hz or 240Hz TVs out there, has a motion enhancing feature (Motion Plus) that makes a lot of movies become video-like (instead of film), i.e., the soap opera effect. Some people likes it, most don’t. Personally I don’t but you can easily turn off the feature or I use the custom setting to keep the blurr reduction at 10 while reducing the judder to 4.

Samsung HLT6187SAX 61-Inch Slim LED Engine 1080p DLP HDTV Review

I have had the Samsung 6187 for three years. The bulb is till good and the picture quality is excellent. I have had a problem with the Television shutting off with an error message Check Fan Light #2. This has happened twice. If you are computer savvy, this is the fun part. The inside is very similar to a computer and quite easy to replace parts yourself if needed. When the Fan #2 error message comes on, basically the fan needs to be cleaned. Take off all the screws on the back cover and each of the components inside basically plug into each other. The fan in on the right side, rear. I just take a slightly damp cloth and wipe up the dust that builds up in the fan and put it back together. You can do it by just taking off the back and using your finger with a cloth and it may work, but it would be difficult to clean behind the fan without taking the three screws off the plastic housing. The great thing about DLP is when the lamp eventually goes out, you can replace the bulb. An LCD or Plasma has a half life and eventually will go darker, but not the DLP.
