Best bang for the buck, great features of LED

Review Date: July 10, 2008
Reviewer: mikepro, Ann Arbor, MI
Very happy with this TV! Much improved over last years LED sets. Excellent picture, great performance, and nice, efficient LED engine. Does it have the best picture available? No, that's probably the 9G Pioneer Kuro plasma, but that costs about $3000 more. Even the new Mitsubishi bulb based DLP's have a slightly better picture, since they use the newer TI Darkchip4 DLP chip, and the Samsung uses the Darkchip3. But, I feel the advantages of the LED light engine outweigh any slight picture quality difference. In my opinion, this TV has the best bang for the buck, by far.

I wrote a FAQ on AVS forum, so I will include some of that here:

- Why should I get a 750 LED series over the 650 bulb series?

* The 750 comes in bigger sizes, 61" and 67".
* The 750 has an LED light source that should last the life of the set. No bulbs to replace.
* The 750 uses the CinemaPure Color Engine that creates brilliant, realistic images and displays color that's 40% brighter than traditional HDTVs. (Note that most sources don't take advantage of this extra color space. Some Camcorders do support it.)
* Nearly instant startup times, with instant brightness no need for the bulb or ballast to warm up.
* No spinning color wheel, so quieter TV (color wheels spin fast and can sometimes have a high pitch whine), and less moving parts
* Much, much less chance of seeing rainbows as the LED's cycle much faster than the color wheel.
* "Green" TV. The LED set uses much less power than bulb based sets and has one of the lowest energy consumption of TV's. Note that actual energy usage is less than the max rated watts listed on the TV.

- Why should I get the 750 series over a competitor, like the Mitsubishi

* The 750 has an LED light source that should last the life of the set. No bulbs to replace.
* Nearly instant startup times, with instant brightness no need for the bulb or ballast to warm up.
* No spinning color wheel, so quieter TV (color wheels spin fast and can sometimes have a high pitch whine), and less moving parts

* "Green" TV. The LED set uses much less power than bulb based sets and has one of the lowest energy consumption of TV's. Note that actual energy usage is less than the max rated watts listed on the TV.
* The Samsung has 120Hz video processing for smooth, judder free playback of 24 fps film based material, such as Blu-Ray movies. Have to move to the expensive Diamond series to get this in the Mitsubishi.
* Extensive user menu settings for picture adjustments
* The Phlatlight LED engine is made in the USA.

This TV has A LOT of options for adjusting the picture. So many, that some may get confused, so I will post my suggested settings. First of all, when you get the set or see it in the store, it defaults to Dynamic mode, which in my opinion looks HORRIBLE!!! Don't judge this set too much by how it looks in the store, it looks waaay better in person.

Almost bought the HLT series from Samsung when I read that it was being replaced by this model. Several issues were addressed, one concerning a halo effect that effected some of the sets, which Samsung later had a fix for. When shopping, went to BB and CC to compare this set with larger screen lcd, plasmas and dlp models. Chose this over other brands of dlp because there is no bulb to replace in the Samsung (led light source). For the same quality picture I found that the plasmas and lcd sets were far more expensive in this screen size range.

Ordered from Amazon, was delivered, unboxed, and hooked up to make sure everything was fine, by the trucking co. Very satisfied with their white glove delivery. In fact, it was better than I expected.

The picture on this set is much better at home than what you see in well-lit stores. The contrast, color and resolution are amazing. Even up close the picture is excellent. Replaced a Toshiba 60" (HD) that was about six years old. Major improvement in HD. The screen on this has no reflective glare as the older one did. Always had a reflection of something in the screen, a light, window... Have directv, so was able to use the HDMI hook up, that replaced the 3 wire component, and two wire audio to the set--now just one. The sound from the set is ample,(it has SRS) however, I hooked it up to surround which gives the viewing experience a lot more kick!

I highly recommend this set on my personal satisfaction, and Amazon for their excellent customer service and the delivery.

I ordered this last Sunday. It shipped out Monday from Reno and got to LAX by Tuesday. I called CEVA on Wednesday and had it delivered Friday morning. I was apprehensive of the bowing issues I've been reading about on avsforum.com, but I do not see any bowing on mine. Also, mine came with the updated firmware already installed (it was manufactured 3/31/08). The picture is fantastic -- it's replacing a 5 year old Samsung HLM507W. I have DirecTV and a PS3 feeding it. The SD picture is also much, much better than my old set. The price dropped 3 times since I ordered it, and I was able to get a refund for the price difference already because of Amazon's 30-day price guarantee. Couldn't be happier with it.
Big Eye Candy at a Very Reasonable Price

I've been watching Samsung's LED DLP technology for about a year now, so when the next generation came out a few months ago, I got ready to buy. And I happily did so from Amazon.com.

LED's provide pure red, green, and blue light, and those in this set claim a life rating of 60,000 hours (that's 8 hours per day for 20 years). No lamp to replace, no spinning color wheel, no rainbow effects, no motor/fan noise. The whites are bright, and the darks are black. My unit shipped with the current firmware already installed.

I'm not hung up on having a TV that's wall mountable, so I wasn't limited to plasma and LCD sets. And at less than 16 inches deep, my options are still open for cabinets and stands. My only challenge with this form factor so far has been mounting the center speaker, but I just ordered a OmniMount CCH1B Center Channel Speaker Shelf from Amazon, so that should do the trick.

I've gone high-tech geek [almost] all the way for the sources and connections. I say "almost" because I haven't invested in Blue-Ray just yet. But, I do have a TiVo HD, HD cable box, and up-scaling DVDR all connected by HDMI, and our Wii is using the component cables. All pictures are pristine and crisp! The colors are amazing, but I may need to tone down the brightness just a tad: watching the Stanley Cup playoffs, the ice is almost blinding, but the set's 10,000:1 contrast ratio is very apparent with the darkness of the puck and players' uniforms. And, although the Wii is not breaking any graphics barriers compared to Xbox or PlayStation, the video is detailed and vibrant. Hooking up to my laptop with a RGB cable was sweet -- a 61" computer monitor!

In my opinion, reviews are most helpful when they aren't all positive or negative, so now I'll mention some drawbacks or less fortunate issues I've experienced. As noted in the manual, the optical output from the TV is only 5.1 channel for stations tuned by the TV itself. All of the other digital sources coming in only get 2-channel audio out the optical connection. This is a bit lame, but all that means is that I have to use my surround sound receiver to change inputs for digital audio. I guess I could go buy one that has HDMI switching capabilities. Also, since I've had the set, 3 times when I turned it on, I got a message, "Check Fan No. 3". Each time I turned the TV off and back on and the message didn't reappear. I'd want to place a service call, but the inconsistency would make it difficult to troubleshoot. I have a warranty -- I'll keep my eye on it. Lastly, although I have the TV's speakers turned off in its menu settings, occasionally, the TV speakers will turn on very loudly. I have to navigate the menu, turn the speakers on, turn down the volume, and then turn the speakers back off. This has only been happening since I started using a Harmony remote with my set up, so it's probably not the TV, just a stray or errant signal coming from my remote.

In summary, this is an excellent television that I highly recommend. The picture is awesome, the array of inputs is excellent, and the price is affordable (and dropping) -- I've already been refunded [...] with Amazon's Post-Order Price Guarantee.
Phenomenal set

Review Date: May 16, 2008
Reviewer: Jon, Washington DC
On my fourth week of owning this set now. The settings out of the box are (as most HDTVs) set exaggeratedly high for brightness, contrast and sharpness, but turning off the edge enhancement, and cranking down the settings provides a phenomenal picture for both HD and SD sources. Brightness and viewable angles are excellent, and the form factor is great.
Black levels are excellent as well.

I was trying to decide between this set and the 60" Kuro Plasma from Pioneer....and for 1/3 the cost, this is probably still 90% of the picture of the Kuro (except for those amazing blacks).

There was an early issue with the set randomly resetting, but Samsung has published a firmware update that addresses it completely.

The ability to show photos via USB is also pretty cool though not something I'll use a ton.

Home Movie Theater!

Review Date: July 29, 2008
Reviewer: R. Melcher,
This is the 2nd Samsung DLP that I have owned. The first being a Samsung 56" 5650, it still worked great when upgrading to this model, I just really wanted the new features such as the LED projection and admittedly the extra size (insert joke here). I did the research into the plasma and LCD units and just couldn't rationalize why I would spend comparable money for a 42" TV. Along with this price difference, the plasmas and LCDs, in my opinion, just don't handle the non-HD programming nearly as well as DLP units, too pixilated. As for the HD picture, it's amazing... I would gladly put it up against a plasma or LCD.

If you are thinking that this TV might be too big for your room, it's likely not! The viewing distance that I typically have on this TV is around 7-8' away and it's perfect. At this distance it is comparable to the ratio you are experiencing in a good seat at the theater. You can adjust the display to the brightness level of your preference, but just in general I have found the DLP to be a softer more eye friendly image than the LCD or Plasma and comparable to what you experience in a modern theater.

For the gamers, this set is the bomb! If you have found yourself changing the brightness level just to be able to see the details in darker games like Gears of War and then switching to watching TV to have a whitewash... there is a quick select button on the remote control that goes to `Game' mode that trasitions the picture to a mode that allows you see stuff the way that the games designers intended them to be seen.

I will leave you with this thought... You are just sitting down in your favorite chair, the unbelievable smell of the extra buttered popcorn that your friends and family are passing around dominates the air ... then all of a sudden the intro scene of Star Wars Episode 4 starts rolling across this 67" badboy while the theme song belts out of a well bassed sound system....... Yeah, it's worth it!

First and foremost, size isn't everything. But it's certainly nice to have! When I began researching TVs to replace my 9 year-old Toshiba 36" CRT, I was only looking in the 46-52" range. I'm in the military and move every couple years, so I needed something that I could move safely and that would work in any reasonable environment. This eliminated plasmas, which reputedly do not perform well at higher altitudes. Next I looked at LEDs. The black levels are getting better, although it seems B&W stores continue to carry models 2-3 generations back for the same price you can order the newest models online. But then you run in to the dead pixel issue and the insecurity that comes along with an LED, and the hassle if you have a dead pixel out of the box and you purchased online. Nevertheless, I continued to look at LEDs until going out to a B&M store to actually look at TVs. I knew ahead of time that stores don't calibrate TVs on display and you can't judge picture quality based on what you see in the store, but I did want to get a better sense of the layout, saturation, issues with any uneven lighting of the screen, and so forth. On my way to the back wall with LEDs I walked through an aisle of DLP sets - a couple Sammies and a Mitsubishi. They looked nice, and they were larger than life. Black levels were solid, even when uncalibrated. So I went home and started researching DLPs to compare to the Sony and Samsung LEDs I had previously narrowed my search to. Lo and behold, the Samsung 6xA750 TVs were getting the most favorable reviews by videophiles. They didn't like the sound from the TV's speakers (and for good reason - it sounds like a tin can) but as a monitor everyone seemed to love the LED-based 750 series. I also read briefly about last year's 650 series, but didn't want to bother with bulb-based technology, so I was left with the 61" or 67" version of the A750 series. It seemed more people had QC issues with the 61" than the 67" for some reason, so I decided to bite the bullet and buy the 67", which is so much larger than I originally contemplated that I can only imagine what my wife is thinking about me right now. However, the 67A750 is cheaper than any of the newer-model 52" LED flatscreens I was considering, still weighs less than my old 36" CRT, and the picture is incredible. On blu-ray discs the picture is breathtaking. I haven't seen HD cable or satellite on it (I'm with DirecTV and they provide absolutely NO incentive to upgrade, wanting an arm and a leg to do so) but others with similar observations to mine on other aspects of this TV claim it's the best picture they've ever seen. Those are certainly my sentiments with blu-ray. When I set up my 5.1 home theater it felt like I was *in* the movie, not just watching it. I'm afraid to watch a horror movie on this thing - I might poop myself. Have I mentioned the picture is incredible?

Even on SD sources, the TV looks great. It upscales to 1080p, and does a better job of it, in fact, than my Denon receiver, through which all sources run. You will still see some fuzziness around edges if you look closely, for nothing I've found can upscale a SD source perfectly, and you'll see some splotches on a completely black screen, but the picture on this TV even with SD sources is more than acceptable. Perhaps the fuzziness would be even more difficult to see on a smaller TV of equal capability (the 61A750) but what you gain with the extra size when using HD sources outweighs the advantage the 61" might have with SD sources by virtue of its size.

I did hundreds of hours of homework over 4 months before buying a TV. I was confident I had made the right choice when I ordered this from Amazon, and am certain of it now that the TV has arrived.

One final note, which is about shipping: my experience was as follows. Ordered TV at 1pm central time friday. Amazon package tracker originally said TV would not ship until Tuesday. This is because CEVA tries to get a full truck before pulling out of amazon warehouse. TV actually shipped same day, and arrived in Kansas City at 9am Sunday morning. Monday was Columbus Day. TV was delivered to my house in perfect condition at 9am Tuesday. Five stars for Amazon and CEVA as well as the TV!

Make sure you read the reviews on the optional extended warranty here on amazon before you buy it.

Summary: The only drawback of this TV is the quality of the sound it outputs. The picture is flawless. Amazon and CEVA did a great job getting the TV to me, which along with outstanding price makes Amazon one of the best sources for this TV.

I recently purchased this TV from Amazon (sold from Amazon inventory for $2049.98 grand total with 24 months same as cash). Delivered in one week by a private carrier, was delivered to my TV stand and they checked to see if it worked. Very nice delivery and service at no extra charge! Outstanding picture. Can't really do a fair comparison with a big screen plasma but at 1/3rd the price this thing is awesome. 1080i Directv signal looks great. 1080p XBox 360 is the best gaming I have experienced. I have yet to play with picture/color adjustments but right out of box I am happy. Can't say about sound as I have it hooked to a home theatre system. Plenty of connectivity. TV has a nice finish and is aesthetically pleasing. Remote is average but I have a programmable remote so it won't be used. I would strongly suggest this TV if you are not looking to spend big bucks for a 67" TV. I couldn't find the Samsung matched stand so I went to Best Buy and got an Init NT-C1201 stand ($319.99) that actually matches this thing perfectly and has two nice big shelves and raises TV to my perfered viewing height (a little higher than others I looked at). Hope this helps.
Stunning!!!

Had this set for three days and have found nothing to dislike about it. It replaced my 65" CRT RP Mitsubishi and it's like having HD for the first time all over again. Great array of input connections (though they're on the wrong side for me for now; new stand is ordered). Makes even 480i dvd's look great.
all you can say is WOW

This TV is awsome you cant find a better deal for 2k I almost bought a mitsubishi 72inch that would have been a huge mistake this thing has an incredible picture and if you are a gamer you wont believe your eyes If you own a x-box 360 make sure you set it to 1080 an prepare to get blown away. But the sound quality from the box blows I highly recomend a surround system and a hormony 880 universal remote.

Beautiful Picture

Review Date: December 21, 2009
Reviewer: James Voris, London, UK
I've had the set for 30 days now. I had some early concerns on the whole Edge-Lighting thing but they turned out to be frivolous. The picture has been outstanding. Played Dark Knight and Underworld, and the set handled the contrasts and deep blacks superbly.

The thin design is a work of art. My set sits on a console (not mounted) and sets the room off nicely; no visible wires and elegant design.

The streaming functions are a nice feature; good integration with Amazon and Netflix. However, I'm pouzzled as to why there doesn't appear to be a way to access free internet content via portals like Hulu, TV network sites and such, without a laptop. (Or I haven't figured it out yet.)

One mild annoyance that has more to do with Sony than the XBR10: No wireless internet dongle available from Sony. The Samsung version only works with Samsung products. So if you don't have a Ethernet port nearby, you'll need a wireless bridge to use a wireless home network.
Best TV in the world

I've had my KDL52-XBR10 since mid-December. WOW! Beautiful design. The picture quality is mind-blowing. Watching the Winter Olympics in HD is amazing, you can see every hair in detail. The colors are spectacular and the blacks are DEEP. 240 Hz Motion Flow makes everything smooth. The picture is spectacular right out of the box, but you also have complete control over picture (and sound). Settings, inputs, Internet, and other options are accessible via the well-thought out on-screen Xcross Media Bar. To access the Internet or your home network directly from the XBR10, you'll either need a hard-wired Ethernet connection between the XBR10's media box and your router, or a wireless bridge (e.g. Linksys WET610N) connected to the media box to access your wireless router (e.g. Linksys WRT610N). I chose the wireless option and it works flawlessly.
XBR10 : Window on the world!

Review Date: April 27, 2010
Reviewer: Claude Lanouette, Montréal QC CANADA
Owning this set since December, and after viewing many series like the Tudor or Rome, plus many Criterion and BBC Opus Arte Blu-Rays, having also this set hooked to a PS3 to enjoy 1080p racing games like Gran Turismo, there is only one expression to summarize the viewing experience : a window on the world! The latest shock : Avatar!

Previously ownner of a XBR 800 CRT 34 incher, jumping to 52 inches was an incredible experience. But please don't sit too far! Consider that this size is now a new way to look at programs. 1080p can be easily viewed across a TV table, between the couch and the TV furniture.

You can put it on your best table or buffet, as a work of art : no cumbersome wires running into it, since the receiver is in a separate box.

Of course, you pay more, but you get much more, very much more.

Product was very impressive. Too bad nobody at the Sony stores
knew what they were selling. This product is much better than any
competitor's product
Warning : Failed after 1 year, If you have to have a Sony XBR then buy Extended Warranty or BUY another brand

Here's my story, hope someone can learn from my tragic mistake. Furthermore, I just realized the LCD panel is actually made by Samsung NOT Sony. If you buy a Sony TV; why is the LCD Panel (the most important and expensive part of the TV) is made in Korea by Samsung. The picture might be good but how long will it last.....for me it only lasted 1 year and 4 months. Also If you do a simple search on Amazon you will find that Amazon does not sell Sony XBR LCD TV directly anymore since I guess they have so many complaints from their customers on the Sony LCD TV. Go ahead look and see you can find Amazon selling Sony XBR LCD TV directly...Amazon actually refer you to another brand like LG or other brands when you are looking any Sony XBR LCD TVs.....and my Full Story below:

5/9/2010- I brought the Sony XBR series TV on Amazon about 1 year and 4 months ago and now the TV have failed. The picture quality was amazing until just yesterday the picture started to degrade and now it has green clouds and rainbows all over the pictures. I just call the Sony authorize tech service from they said it will cost me $75 for the in house service since it's out of warranty. They also said that if it's the LCD panels has failed then it would cost as much as the TV itself. This is my first LCD from Sony but I have 3 other Sony TVs- 1 30" Sony CRT, 1 47" XBR rear projection and 1 65" XBR rear projection TV. All the previous Sony TVs had no problem at all and I am still using the 65" rear projection TV. What happen to Sony's quality and reliability product? I guess it went to the same place as other first rated Japanese products like Toyota. They are just too busy on cutting cost and lower their reliabilities so they can rack in the billion dollars profit. So if you like the picture quality of Sony TVs; be advice to buy their extended warranty. I wish I did because if the LCD panel failed then my LCD TV is just a big 52" black picture frame hanging on the wall. If you really, really have to get a Sony XBR LCD TV then I would recommend to get 5 years extended warranty plan for $299-it will save you a lot of frustration. And after 5 years, you will probably do a upgrade anyway.

5/11/2010 update: Today the tech came and verified that the LCD panel has gone bad after 1 year and 4 months of service. In the tech's own words-the panel is a factory defect since it should not failed after just a little over a year of service and that I should call Sony and see they will reimburse the cost of the panel. I am so disappointed on the product since I did not just buy any Sony TV but the top of the line XBR series TV. I called Sony and told them the whole story but they just told me to fax all the documents -receipt and repair cost to Sony and they will evaluate it. I will wait and see what happen - but at this point I am really disappointed and frustrated with the whole thing! :-(

Update: 5/13/2010-Just received a call from Sony "Customer Relations" today. It's official-Sony don't stand behind their products. They will not pay for the cost of their defective LCD panel since it's out of warranty (1 year) after 1 year and 4 month of service. They just lost a loyal customer. No more Sony products in my house. Sony customer relations representative even has the nerve to offer me $900 reimbursement on a $$3517.75 repair cost. That's right-I will have to pay $2617.76 to fix my $2018.88 LCD TV. So if you buy a Sony TV and you have a defective LCD panel after 1 year of use then you can just throw that TV in the trash because Sony will tell you go F yourself and trash the TV. Good luck on buying a Sony LCD TV because you going to need it-and looks like from my research, I am not the only customer that have a defect LCD panel after 1 year. In fact, the LCD panel is not even made by Sony but Samsung made in Korea. Samsung LCD Panels have notoriously for premature failure of their LCD panels. So no more Sony LCD for me or should I say Samsung LCD TV ....
